Book Review: The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry

December 31, 2011 by Melissa

About the Author: Kathleen Flinn is an American writer and journalist who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris.  She is currently on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Culinary Professionals.

Summary: The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry is Kathleen’s journey of following her dream of attending the famed Le Cordon Bleu in Paris after being let go from her executive position at a software company in London.  She shares her ups and downs of three years of life in culinary school.

Things I liked:  I really enjoyed this book for it’s inside peek at culinary school.  Attending pastry school is a dream of mine, so reading about Kathleen’s experience of taking a chance and going for her dream left me inspired.  The book is both humurous and heartwarming.  There are also recipes at the end of each chapter that made me want to put the book down and jump into the kitchen!  I’ve already made the chocolate soufflès.

Things I didn’t like:  The only thing I was left wanting from the book was a little more technical detail about the classes and procedures of culinary school.

Would I recommend this book to others:  Yes, especially if you’ve ever dreamt of going to culinary school!  It’s a great read and the recipes are an added bonus.  I’m sure someday there will be a reality show about culinary school, but isn’t the book always better?
